Description:
El Retoño is an eco-lodge whose goal is to be in harmony with nature. We are located in the town of Coatepec which nestles in the cool, mist shrouded mountains above the hot, humid coastal area of the city of Veracruz. This quaint colonial town offers a peek into the evolving life of a small Mexican town. Since the early 1800's this has been the center of the rich, shade grown coffee for which Veracruz is famous. These days, however, tourism centers more and more on the natural treasures of the region: waterfalls, river rating, hiking, bird watching, and spectacular flower/orchid shows.
El Retoño Ecolodge sits in the middle of a beautiful natural setting and our goal is to maintain this setting and increase the opportunities for local people to earn a decent living though sustainable tourism rather than through the destruction via agriculture of this pristine area.
The heavy damage to the environment caused by the over-development of other coastal and mountain more... areas of Mexico has not yet happened in the state of Veracruz. Up to now the majority of tourists have been select groups of Mexican nationals who come for the nature and outdoor activities found here.
Vistas Veracruz Ecotours is working with the local community and universities to protect the abundance of plant and wildlife that surround us. We hope to provide opportunities for exchanges with university professionals and interns who may want to come to the region for an extended period of research. We are drawing upon the knowledge of our dedicated staff to identify the plants found on the grounds and to develop educational programs for interested groups.
Vistas Veracruz Ecotours is based out of El Retoño Ecolodge and welcomes small groups of visitors who would like to explore this rich biodiverse area. To that end, various ecotours have been designed and planned. We look forward to you coming down to join us!

Responsible Action
Coatepec is a town where most residents enjoy basic services. We have donated to local efforts to protect headwaters of a river and to educate the people living there in ways to maintain the area. Our reserve is open to local school children to come on field trips to observe and learn about the natural resources surrounding them. We have converted a pre-existing wood structure into a sauna and massage room. We contract with indigenous local therapists who provide massage and other somatic therapies.
They receive 100% of their fee while we supply the site and electricity as a service.
Debbie participates in the local ProCoatepec business association where she is currently secretary. This is a very proactive group whose goal is to promote sustainable tourism in the town Coatepec which was recently designated by the Federal Government as a Pueblo Magico. Only a few cities were so selected in Mexico based on their history, architecture and natural beauty.
