The Solar Sisters Program is an innovative nonprofit program whereby international travelers receive basic solar energy training and travel to rural villages to install solar systems in schools, monasteries, community centers and hospitals. The program is an incredible opportunity for international travelers to experience the culture and geography of some of the most majestic places on earth while making an everlasting contribution to the vitality of a South Asian community. Opportunities are currently offered in Nepal and Sri Lanka, and in 2005 programs will be offered in Tibetan refugee settlements in India.Solar energy is a viable solution to the social, environmental and health crisis created by the use of petroleum and wood for energy. In Nepal, electricity is available to less than 5% of the rural population, in Sri Lanka, villages bordering tropical forests are too remote to access the grid, and of the 130,000 Tibetan refugees living in India, 80% live in remote areas with minimal more... access to power.
