Hornbill camp at Thattekkad near Kochi, is so located, to perfectly blend into the forest, so you can enjoy your own private jungle and the spectacular view of the river Periyar. Known as the Birder's Paradise, the camp and the adjoining Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is home to over 270 species of birds, including all the endemics. Mottled Wood Owl Spot-bellied Eagle Owl Malayan Night Heron, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Grey-headed Bulbul, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon are some of the rarer species found here. Besides, the camp has a lot to offer those with a taste for adventure. The Periyar is ideal for river kayaking. Trekkers are rewarded with sightings of Elephants during their unique exposure to this lowland rain forest. Hornbill camp and Anerangal camp are at a minimum of thousand meters from village houses so as to avoid disturbing the village life. Staying at one permits you easy contact with local people and the opportunity to become familiar with their traditional way of life, and you can take part in sponsored activities that are low-impact on the environment
At Hornbill camp, we’ve been dedicated to preserve Salim Ali’s Bird sanctuary, Thattekkad evergreen forest inhibiting the deforestation and the Periyar River. The use of motorboats in the river will destroy its shores and therefore silt the river. Our excursions into this river are always on “Kayaks or Rafts”. Our effort includes protecting the beautiful and rare flora and fauna in Thattekkad and Anaerangal.
Our naturalist had created a butterfly garden in Hornbill camp, resulting in the expansion and vitality of different species of butterflies in our Hornbill camp. It can find plenty of food, as well as water and nests in our protection area.
All of our employees are recruited from the local areas and given training to provide their best in services and operations. Vegetables, fish, meat, mineral waters, etc are bought from local market or local people only to make sure the benefits of tourism is shared to the people of Thattekkad and Anerangal. We even advise the guests to use local taxis and auto rickshaws for their sightseeing and other transfers.
All human presence as well as facilities brings a great deal of impact in the environment; however there are many ways of minimizing the impacts, such as recycling and the proper treatment of the garbage and effluents produced.
All the garbage that comes from the meals is used in chicken and swine nurturing, the fruit shells are offered to birds and other barren animals. Aluminum cans plastic recipients and glasses are collected, separated, Stored and forwarded to the proper recycling companies. Cardboard boxes and wood are reused at the lodge or incinerated. Other materials are bagged and taken to the city’s waste deposit.
