Description:
Lama dance (Cham) is performed every year in Rumtek monastery, the biggest Karma kagyu monastery in Sikkim. The two day event (Cham) is being performed by lamas and monks after a weeklong sacred Mahakala puja. First day, they perform without any masks and beautiful dresses which are made from fine silk and fabric from China. Some of them were weaved as far back as the 11th Century. But on the second day, you will be surprised to witness those wonderful traditions, great masks and fine clothes. It began in the 11th Century at Tsurphu monastery, the first Kagyu Monastery in Tibet which was established by the 1st Karmapa. In early 1970’s, The 16th Karmapa started to perform in the Rumtek monastery to continue one of the oldest karma kagyu’s traditions. Only few people get the opportunity to experience Lama Dance at Rumtek Monastery because the public isn’t normally informed of it. We are very happy to keep you in the loop about 2012’s cham event. The Cham event is being held on 19th more... and 20th of February, 2012 at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim.
