Tanjung Puting National Park is perhaps the best known and most popular orangutan preserve in Kalimantan, if not the world. East Kalimantan's Kutai National Park, though newer, is quickly gaining popularity among orangutan adventure tour enthusiasts. more... There are more opportunities to see orangutans here in their natural state, as opposed to those in the rehabilitation centers. Many also feel that the surroundings have a more unspoiled feel about them than Tanjung Puting.
Kutai is located about two hours from the East Kalimantan capitol of Samarinda, or about four hours away from the more developed and western-friendly oil hub of Balikpappan. We can arrange luxury accomodations just outside the park, or more modest lodging closer to the action inside the park itself.
Sungai Wain is a protected forest within the municipality of Balikpapan and thus very easily accessible from East Kalimantan's major airport in Balikpapan. Legislation to afford national park status is still pending, with plans to develop many more ecotourism facilities within Sungai Wain when this legislation becomes enacted. In the meantime, however, the undeveloped state of Sungai Wain means greater opportunities to enjoy an orangutan adventure tour in perhaps the most unspoilt orangutan preserve of all.
These orangutan preserves also offer a chance to see other wildlife on your adventure tour. This is especially the case in Kutai and Sungai Wain, which are also teeming with gibbons, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, eagles, local asiatic bears, barking deer, perhaps wild pigs and a seemingly endless list of fauna. You may even get lucky and spot a croc in Kutai or Sungai Wain.

Day 01 : PANGKALANBUN AIRPORT - KUMAI - TANJUNG HARAPAN - RIMBA LODGE
Meeting service on arrival at Pangkalanbun. After having lunch at Blue Kecubung Hotel you will be transfered to Kumai as a transit village in the way to get to Rimba Lodge using woodenboat called Klotok cruise up the Sekonyer River. A stopover at Tanjung Harapan will be made on the way up where part of orangutans are taken care here in the Camp. After checking in at Rimba Lodge you will have chance to explore the river and see Proboscis Monkeys and birds.
Dinner and overnight at Rimba Lodge.
Day 02 : RIMBA LODGE - CAMP LEAKEY - RIMBA LODGE
Early in the morning, after breakfast, three hours cruising to reach Camp Leakey, where you will use the time for trekking through the heart of tropical rain forest, searching for orangutans, wild, birds, other primates and many exotic tropical plants of Borneo. In the afternoon, join the feeding time, the best time to take some picture of orangutans. Lunch will be provided on boat. Afterwards, return to the Lodge.
Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.
Day 03 : RIMBA LODGE - PONDOK TANGUY - RIMBA LODGE
After breakfast, tour start to Pondok Tanguy as a new rehabilitation center for orphaned orangutans. In this park you you will observe orangutans in their natural habitat. Lunch will be provided on boat. In the afternoon return to Rimba Lodge
Day 04 : RIMBA LODGE - PANGKALANBUN
Return to Kumai after breakfast and direct transfer to Iskandar Airport for your next departure.
Kutai National Park Orangutan/Wildlife Adventure Tour
Day 01
Balikpapan - Bontang (LD)
After arrival at Balikpapan airport meeting service and direct transfer to Bontang by bus/car. Overnight at a good Hotel in Bontang.
Day 02
Bontang - Sangatta - Mentoko (BLD)
After breakfast in the morning start the trip by car/bus to Sangatta from where we will continue the trip by motor canoe upstream Sangatta River to Mentoko. In the afternoon we will make a short trek in the jungle to observe wildlife like the Orangutan. Overnight at research lodge in Mentoko.
Day 03
Mentoko Rainforest (BLD)
In the morning we will trek in the rainforest to observe wildlife like monkeys, Orangutan, tropical birds like Cockatoos, Hornbills, and Sun Birds. In the afternoon cruise up on the river to watch wildlife along the river in the rainforest. Overnight at observation lodge in Mentoko.
Day 04
Mentoko - Sangkima - Teluk Kaba (BLD)
Early in the morning go down stream to Sangatta from where we will go by car/bus to Sangkima to observe the proboscis monkey and various species of birds. In the afternoon we will trek to Teluk Kaba bay on the sea of Sulawesi where we can relax on the beautiful white beach and swim in the blue sea. Overnight at lodge in Teluk Kaba.
Day 05
Teluk Kaba - Samarinda (BLD)
From Teluk Kaba go by boat up on the sea of Sulawesi to Bontang, during this trip you can see the fishermen's houses build on the coral banks in the sea. After arrival in Bontang we will continue the trip by car/bus to Samarinda where we stay at Mesra Hotel, dinner at Mesra hotel.
Day 06
Samarinda - Balikpapan (B)
After breakfast free as leisure until departure to Balikpapan from where you can go to your new destination.
