Tumani Tenda is a Jola village with approximately 300 inhabitants living in seven extended families. It is situated 25km east of Brikama and 3 km from Kafuta on a tributary of the Gambia River. Tumani Tenda owns 140 hectares of cultivated land, including a species rich forest that is continually upgraded with seedlings and which serves a pharmacy and natural water reservoir.Tumani Tenda is tourism with a soul. It brings visitors in touch with the day-to-day lives of the people. The village gives visitors the opportunity to experience their special cuisine, treasured dances, sacred rituals and invites guests into their homes.A typical visit to the camp will include the horticultural garden, community forest, schools, canoe trip to see the woman collect oysters from the mangroves, ox cart safari, village tour, fishing, bird watching, salt making workshop, soap making workshop, Bank/Tie and Dye workshop and a visit to the beekeepers.The accommodation is build in a way which is sensitive to more... its surrounding environment, using local resources and materials. The round houses consist of atmosphere. All rooms have mosquito nets and clean fresh water is derived from the village wells.There is bar and restaurant serving local style lunches, eaten communally, and evening meals are served in the European style.
