Sendero Mexicos Profile

About Me

Interestingly, I came to be involved in developing nature tours in Mazatlan, Mexico with my wife in a roundabout way. We both studied aquaculture and arrived in beautiful Mazatlan in 1992 working in that industry. Spending quite alot of time outdoors and exploring we discovered some incredible places and natural phenomena, got inspired by a great friend in San Carlos Sonora well into the adventure tour industry and we dove into tourism and conservation.

One of the tours we started once we discovered that serious bird watchers form around the world had been coming to Mazatlan for a trip up the Mazatlan Durango highway for a chance to see the Tufted Jay, a stricking microendemic bird. After a number of trips we noticed that the beautiful pine oak forests and canyons at 6,500 foot elevations two and a half hours from Mazatlan were in dire need of conservation initiatives that could afford other sustainable activities aside from logging. We established contact with the "Ëjido" or land co-operative that owns the forests there. Then working with Patricio Robles Gil, the most accomplished Mexican nature photographer / publisher and experienced conservationist and then with Pronatura Noroeste, the regional representation of Mexico´s oldest and largest conservation NGO´s, we helped establish what is now the Tufted Jay Preserve. Because of my actions coordinating this effort, I was invited to joind the advisory board at Pronatura Noroeste.
In January 2009 my company, Sendero Mexico organized the Mazatlan Bird Festival (www.mazatlanbirdfestival.com)

I think that because we are pioneers in the Mazatlan area (which is in the gateway to the Sea of Cortez and bound by the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains) since 1994, the fact that we have explored and supported sustainable development initiatives such as the Tufted Jay Preserve, the fact that we understand what birdwatchers want and need as well as the cruise lines that visit Mazatlan it makes us unique in our area.
